As Independence Day approaches, many of us look forward to celebrating with family, friends, and, of course, fireworks. However, while fireworks are a festive tradition, they can also be extremely dangerous when not handled properly.

In 2024 alone, approximately 14,700 people were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries, and sadly, 11 individuals lost their lives. The Air Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Department urges everyone to prioritize safety this 4th of July.

The Safest Option: Leave It to the Pros

The best way to enjoy fireworks? Attend a professional show. Not only are these displays more spectacular, but they’re also far safer. If you do choose to use consumer fireworks, make sure to follow these essential safety tips:

Fireworks Safety Tips:

  • Keep fireworks away from children. Young children should never handle fireworks, and older children should only use them under the close supervision of an adult.
  • Stay sober. Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Use protective gear. Anyone handling or standing near fireworks should wear eye protection.
  • Never hold lit fireworks. Always place them on the ground and stand back.
  • Keep fireworks outdoors. Never ignite them indoors or in enclosed spaces.
  • Maintain a safe distance. Light only one device at a time and move away quickly.
  • Avoid body contact. Never place any part of your body directly over a firework.
  • Create a safety perimeter. Ensure spectators remain a safe distance away.
    • For ground-based devices (such as fountains), keep people at least 35 feet away.
    • For aerial devices: maintain a distance of 150 feet.
  • Be cautious with duds. Let them sit for at least 10 minutes before handling, and then soak them in water.
  • Do not relight malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Never ignite fireworks in containers.
  • Properly dispose of fireworks. Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.
  • Have water nearby. Keep a bucket or hose handy in case of a fire.
  • Avoid illegal fireworks. Use only approved consumer-grade products.
  • Respect sparklers. While fun, they can still cause serious injuries if mishandled.
